A young and attractive face is not just about smooth, wrinkle-free skin. Signs of youthfulness include well-defined cheekbones, a beautiful jawline, and the absence of nasolabial folds. Unfortunately, time and gravity are not kind to the muscles of the neck and face. Therefore, the first signs of a ‘tired’ face become visible around the age of 23-25.
Over the years, through advertising and propaganda, we have learned a few things. For example, to have a toned body, you need to go to the gym. To combat wrinkles, you need to use specialized serums and creams. To have cheekbones like Angelina Jolie, you need to visit a plastic surgeon. But in reality, there are more than 55 muscles in the face and neck. No equipment or sportswear is needed to train these muscles. And training them yields significant results.
The exercise complex developed by Annalise Hagen, known as facial yoga, is based on the principle that facial muscles can be trained just like the muscles in our body. Just as neglecting body muscles leads to weakness and sagging, the same can happen to facial muscles as we age. The popularity of facial yoga is growing rapidly, with celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Aniston among its followers.
Practicing facial yoga involves various simple poses. It is recommended to perform them daily, preferably before bedtime, when you don’t have anywhere to go and your face is free of makeup. For best results, facial yoga requires maximum relaxation. Start with 10 minutes of practice and gradually build up to 20 minutes. You will see impressive changes in your face after just three weeks of regular exercises.
Home exercises for facial yoga:
Amazing!
The best way to start is by slowly opening your mouth as wide as possible and repeating this 10 times while silently saying ‘Wow!’ This helps relax the muscles of the face and relieve any tension. During this pose, make sure no wrinkles appear on your forehead.
Big ‘O’
Form an elongated ‘O’ shape with your lips. It’s important to press your lips against your teeth. Feel the muscles around your mouth and nose stretch. Hold this position for 5 seconds. Repeat twice.
Note: During the pose, you should feel tension in the muscles from the corners of your mouth to your eyes. This pose helps create prominent cheekbones and a defined jawline.
Exercise for nasolabial folds
Open your mouth and pull your upper and lower lip over your teeth. This stretches the area around the lips. From this position, lift the corners of your mouth upwards and hold for 2 seconds. Repeat the exercise twice. This pose is effective in combating sagging corners of the mouth.
The concept of the ‘Balloon’
Inhale air into your mouth and close your lips. Then imagine you have a small balloon in your mouth and start rolling it slowly. First under your right cheek, then under your left cheek, then under your lower lip, and then under your upper lip. Stay in each position for 5 seconds. Repeat the exercise twice.
Note: This exercise effectively combats vertical wrinkles around the lips and prevents their appearance in the future.
Massage with tongue in a circle
Bring your tongue to the right corner of your mouth. Slowly move your tongue clockwise around your mouth (about 5 seconds per rotation). Repeat two more times. This pose engages many muscles around the lips. Additionally, the corners of the mouth are activated, which are often the place where many fine lines appear.
Buddha’s face
During this pose, all the muscles in the face are smoothed and relaxed. Start with 1 minute and gradually build up to 2-3 minutes. Close your eyes and focus on the point between your eyebrows. Your eyelids should remain closed during this process.
‘Free Speech’
This pose is universal and has a positive effect on blood circulation and strengthening facial muscles.
Open your mouth as wide as possible. Stick your tongue out as far as possible. Hold this position for 60 seconds. It’s great if your eyes start to tear up; this way, you remove accumulated toxins.
Surprise me
A pose that, when practiced regularly, helps relieve tension from wrinkles on the forehead and between the eyebrows.
Open your eyes as wide as possible, that is, ‘stare’ without wrinkles on your forehead. Focus on a point in front of you for 5-10 seconds, then relax. Repeat this action 4 times.
“Smiling Fish”
The practice of asanas helps to shape and strengthen the cheeks and lips.
Maintain a smile by pressing your lips together and twisting them into a small knot. Stretch your lips forward while pulling your cheeks inward. Try to smile and hold this position, while firmly tightening the corners of your mouth. Count to 10 and repeat the exercise 5 more times.
Merlin
Performing these exercises helps maintain the strength of the lips and reduce wrinkles around them.
Stretch your neck forward and imagine giving an air kiss. Tighten the muscles of your face and exhale. Keep your forehead flat, without tensing it. Repeat the exercise 4 times. Then press your index and middle fingers against your lips and lightly press. Give 3-4 air kisses.
“Little Monkey”
This exercise helps strengthen the muscles of the jaw and neck and also has a positive effect on the lips.
Tilt your head slightly backward, purse your lips into a tube shape, and pull them up for 15 seconds. Then return to the starting position and relax your lips. Repeat this exercise four times.
“Actress”
In this pose, you quickly alternate between a smile and complete relaxation. This should be done at maximum speed until fatigue sets in. As a result, we get improved overall tone of facial muscles and a lifted contour.
Place your fists under your chin and slowly open your mouth, resisting with your hands. Then press your chin down with your thumb and stick out your tongue as far as possible, pointing the tip downwards.
Facial Yoga by Louis Armstrong
Louis Armstrong, also known as Satchmo, was a renowned American jazz musician and singer. He was known for his unique, gravelly voice and his improvisational skills on the trumpet. Armstrong’s influence on jazz music is still felt, and he is considered one of the greatest musicians of all time.
The asana ‘Louis Armstrong’s Cheeks’ helps strengthen the cheek muscles and give them an elegant shape. Named in honor of the famous musician, the asana mimics the movements of his cheeks while playing the trumpet.
Puff both cheeks and roll the air from one cheek to the other (until there is enough air), then under the upper and lower lip. Repeat this 3 times on each side.
By regularly using asanas, in addition to improving the sexual contours and shape of the face, you will also experience additional “beautiful” benefits for the skin, neck, and hair:
- The face will look firmer and fresher;
- Wrinkles, including deep wrinkles, will become less noticeable;
- Headaches will decrease or disappear;
- The quality of vision will improve;
- The skin will become radiant and acquire a natural peach color;
- Swelling and sagging of the skin of the face and neck will disappear;
- The double chin will disappear;
- The skin texture will be smoothed, making it resilient and bright;
- Hair growth will be stimulated.
By dedicating just a few minutes a day to training the facial muscles, people around the world can naturally and holistically combat the signs of aging. It’s a method that promotes not only outer appearance but also inner well-being, as it emphasizes relaxation and mindfulness.
So, if you’re looking for a non-invasive and effective way to maintain your youthful appearance, why not give facial yoga a try? With the promise of firmer, radiant skin, defined cheekbones, and a natural lift, facial yoga offers an alternative to expensive creams and invasive procedures. It’s time to embrace the power of facial yoga and discover a new dimension of beauty, from within and without.
As you explore the world of yoga, it’s important to remember that there are different styles, each offering unique benefits.
